Grand Opening

There is an interesting legend about the origin of the Year of the Tiger:

in ancient times, there were lions and no tigers in the Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor, who was in charge of the Chinese sign of the lion, wanted to remove the lion from the list, but he had to add a new animal to control the mountains and forests. At this point, the Jade Emperor thought of the tiger guards in front of the palace.

The Tiger Guard in the Palace of Heaven was once just an unknown animal on earth. After learning from his cat master to scratch, pounce, bite, fry, charge, leap and bend, he became a warrior in the mountains and forests. Anyone who fought with it would be killed or injured. From then on, the tiger dominated the mountains and forests. When the Jade Emperor heard that the tiger was so brave and fierce, he sent the tiger to heaven. When the tiger went up to heaven, it fought against the Jade Emperor’s guards and won. From then on, the tiger became the guardian of the palace in heaven.

Soon afterwards, the beasts and fowls on the earth, seeing that there was no one to control them, started to do whatever they wanted and caused havoc on earth. The God of the Land was alerted and asked the Jade Emperor to send the God of Heaven to calm the beasts. The Jade Emperor sent the tiger down to earth, and the tiger asked for a credit for every victory he won. The Jade Emperor only wanted peace on earth, so of course he agreed to the tiger’s request.

When he came to earth, he learnt that lions, bears and horses were the three most powerful animals at the time, and he challenged them to a fight. With its courage and martial arts skills, the tiger defeated the lion, the bear and the horse. The other beasts fled and hid in the uninhabited forest wilderness. The people rejoiced and thanked the tiger for his service to the world.

Back in heaven, the Jade Emperor carved three horizontal lines on the tiger’s forehead for winning three battles in a row. Later on, the earth was harassed by the turtles of the East China Sea and the land was flooded with water. The tiger came back to the mortal world and killed the tortoise monster. When the Jade Emperor was pleased, he gave the tiger a big credit by adding another vertical line to the three horizontal lines on his forehead. The tiger’s forehead was now marked with the word “King”. Since then, the tiger has been the king of all beasts, in charge of all beasts. Even today, the word “king” can still be seen on the tiger’s forehead.

After the lion’s infamy had spread to the Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor decided to remove the title of lion and add the king of beasts, the tiger. From then on, the tiger became the genus, and the lion was relegated to the far south. Of course, the tiger also descended from the Jade Emperor’s palace guards to the mortal world to keep the peace in the lower world forever.
